Haynets and racks work against your horse

  • Pulling hay upwards is an unnatural angle that strains the neck and drops dust and seed into the airways.
  • Expensive forage falls through into the bedding and is trampled and wasted.
  • Nets and loops can catch a hoof or a shod foot, a real risk for foals and youngstock.

There is a better way, and it comes from the floor.

Horses eating hay from ground level in a natural grazing posture

Better for your horse, easier for you

Aids digestion

Forage is taken slowly and steadily, closer to natural trickle-grazing. Kinder to the gut, ideal for good-doers and laminitis-prone horses.

Saves you money on hay

Forage stays in the bar, not trampled into the bedding. Less waste every single day means the Hay Bar pays for itself.

Safer than nets or racks

No loops to catch a hoof or shoe. Safe for mares, foals and youngstock, the very reason the Hay Bar was invented.

Filled in seconds

Drop in a sliced section of a small bale and you are done. Easy enough for a child, saving you precious time on the yard.

Our story

Designed by a horsewoman, for horses

The Hay Bar was created in 2004 by Raylia Dugmore, a breeder and producer of hunters and riding horses to Horse of the Year standard, to help a show-hunter brood mare recovering from pneumonia.

Feeding from the floor helped drain her airways, and she recovered. Over twenty years on, that same simple, British-made design is used in yards across Europe, the USA and South Africa.

Far easier for you, and far better for your horses.

What horse owners say

From the vets, riders and owners who use it every day.

★★★★★

“The Hay Bar is a very good idea for horses especially those with a respiratory problem as it encourages drainage of the respiratory tract also preventing contamination seen when feeding from the floor.”

★★★★★

“I have been using the Hay Bar for my horses that can’t have hay in haynets … it’s a great way to allow the horses to eat with their heads down but without making a mess by dragging all the loose hay around their boxes! They’re tough and withstand my horses pulling at them!”

★★★★★

“I had to contact you! I bought two Hay Bars for my two cobs and had to let you know how brilliant they are. The hay lasts much longer, as they are not ‘fighting’ the net, or snatching at it. They look relaxed and there is no waste. Very pleased!”

Hay Bar questions, answered

Is a Hay Bar better than a haynet?

A Hay Bar lets your horse eat from the floor in a natural grazing position, with no loops to catch a hoof or shoe and far less dust drawn into the airways. Haynets force an unnatural upward pull and drop seed and dust as the horse tugs.

Will a Hay Bar help a laminitic or good-doer horse?

Yes. Forage is taken slowly and steadily, closer to natural trickle-grazing, which helps extend feeding time for good-doers and laminitis-prone horses.

How much hay does a Hay Bar hold?

The Horse Hay Bar holds a full small bale of hay in slices. The Pony Hay Bar holds half a small bale.

Is the Hay Bar safe for foals?

Yes. The open trough has no nets or loops, making it far safer than nets or racks for mares, foals and youngstock. Foal safety is the reason it was invented.

How do I fix my Hay Bar to the wall?

The Hay Bar mounts to a stable wall along its reinforced top edge. Full fitting guidance is supplied with every order.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Hay Bar ships worldwide and is used across Europe, the USA and South Africa. For orders of five or more, or shipping outside mainland UK, contact us for an individual quote.
